Michael is a commercial and corporate lawyer with specialist knowledge in the construction and infrastructure industries. He provides advice for tier-one contractors, financiers, major civil contractors, developers, residential and commercial builders, subcontractors, and energy providers.

Aside from being heavily involved in the construction industry, Michael also works closely with businesses in the transport, not-for-profit, agribusiness, and financial services sectors.

Michael founded Morrissey Law + Advisory with the vision of combining legal and commercial advice with practical solutions to ensure that businesses can obtain the right advice to build for their future.

With a Master in Construction Law from The University of Melbourne, Michael has particular expertise in the roll-out of major infrastructure projects, particularly for rail, road and transport, green technology projects, urban revitalisation, and the residential construction sector. He works closely with his clients and other professional advisors to develop strategies around the management of their business, major transactions, major projects, and dispute resolution.

Michael has significant experience drafting and negotiating complex contracts, and providing strategic advice on project delivery and procurement. His dispute resolution experience includes arbitration, expert determination, and major litigation. This includes litigating payment, delay, and insurance issues across a variety of projects.

Michael also regularly lectures at The University of Newcastle around project delivery, construction law, and security of payment legislation.

A few of Michael’s many highlights include:

  • Successfully resolved ~$20M dispute on a large-scale airport link road upgrade through a combination of adjudication and other alternative dispute resolution methods.

  • Advised a major logistics operator on the upgrade of its automated gantry and crane system and associated rail infrastructure at Port Botany, including the preparation and negotiation of contracts and project documentation.

  • Advised the major civil contractor on the Sydney Northwest Rail Link on its contract and project documentation (contract value ~$150M+).

  • Acted on behalf of the head remediation contractor for One Barangaroo and Barangaroo Metro sites (contract value ~$150M+).

  • Acted on behalf of the head contractor for Darling Harbour Live in developing their subcontract suite.

  • Several In-house roles for major construction and logistics operators as Senior Legal Counsel.

  • Facilitating and leading in-house and industry training sessions on contract law, negotiation and management, and security of payment legislation for a number of companies and organisations including Civil Contractors Federation and Master Builders Association.
